The Philippine automotive industry and market have been growing steadily over the past five years. Sales in 2015 were by 144.8% higher than they had been in 2007, the year when they first recovered from the slump brought about by the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Robust domestic demand is the main driver for the industry. However, automotive production in the country is still underdeveloped compared to that of the ASEAN automotive majors of Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. The weakness of the local automotive industry is mainly the result of inconsistent government policy and the 2010 removal of trade tariffs on completely-built-up (CBU) units which resulted in an influx of imports, many of which came through channels parallel to the manufacturers’ official distribution systems.
