Ethiopian Airlines introduces first flights to Eritrea as border war ends

Ethiopian Airlines has introduced daily passenger flights to Eritrea as the two countries officially put an end to their 20-year border war, Mail and Guardian Online reported. The first flight was scheduled for Tuesday, July 10.

The airline underlined that in the short term it planned to start operating multiple flights to Eritrea a day as well as cargo flights. The revival of the air connection between the two countries is expected to boost the overall political, economic, trade and social ties between them.

On July 9, Ethiopia and Eritrea officially signed a peace declaration, ending a conflict which killed 80,000 people. They have also restored telephone communications and pledged to re-open embassies, Mail and Guardian Online added.
