Guatemala to double geothermal capacity

Guatemala's Energy and Mines Ministry approved a project by company Geotermia Oriental de Guatemala to build a geothermal power plant which will double country’s current capacity in that kind of electricity generation.

The Cerro Blanco project covers 13 km 2 and will have a capacity of 50 MW. It will be located in the Jutiapa department, southern Guatemala.

Currently, there are two geothermal plants operating in the country, Ortitlán and Zunil ,with a total capacity of 50 MW.

Renewables company US Geothermal has also recently announced a discovery of a commercial resource in Guatemala.
