India’s aluminium exports leap 34% y/y on higher output

India’s aluminium exports have surged by 34% year-on-year during the nine-month period ended January 2018 as a result of increase in domestic production and fall in local aluminium demand, Business Standard reported citing data from CARE Ratings report.

The country’s consumption of aluminium was unable to keep pace with the rising production in the last financial year. The domestic production of aluminium has reached 1.67 million tons during the period of April 2017 to February 2018, a 5.8% year-on-year increase, Business Standard noted.

Moreover, the report said India will see minimal effects of the US government’s decision to raise tariffs on aluminium imports. India’s exports of aluminium to the US account for only 2% of the country’s total aluminium imports, Business Standard noted.
