India allocates coal mines to power utilities

To ensure a stable power supply to consumers, the coal ministry will be allocating five coal mines to state-owned power utilities.

The mines, which have already been identified, have a total reserve of around 1,400 million tonnes and are located in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. The mines will be available for allotment in about two weeks.

"The idea is to provide round the clock power to consumers at a cheaper rate. We are also in the process of rationalising coal linkages to utilities, so that the cost of power comes down," commented an official from the ministry.
