Indonesia’s wheat imports expected to hit 12.5 million tonnes in 2018

Indonesia is expected to import 12.5 million tonnes of wheat this year, an increase from 11.8 million tonnes in 2017, the Jakarta Post has reported referring to the data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The surge in wheat imports will make Indonesia the world’s largest importer of wheat, replacing Egypt which has been the number one importer for more than a decade. According to the USDA, the increase is mainly driven by the higher demand for instant noodles, bread and animal feed.

Franciscus Welirang, head of the Indonesia Flour Mills Association, informed the Jakarta Post that the use of wheat for animal feed in Indonesia has been growing steadily in the past two years after the government restricted corn imports to protect local production.
