Mexico’s automotive sales drop 11.3% y/y in May

Mexico’s domestic automotive sales dropped 11.3% year-on-year in May, CEEMarketWatch reported citing figures released by the statistics office INEGI. This is sector’s fourth consecutive decline and it is mainly explained by the weakness of private demand this year.

Country’s automotive sales also fell 5.3% y/y during the first five months of 2019 despite a relatively low comparison base. On the positive side, sector’s output remained strong thanks to high exports.

CEEMarketWatch warned, however, that the local automotive sector’s activity could suffer an eventual negative impact of the tariffs imposed by the United States.
