Vietnam targets increased timber exports by 2020
Vietnam is looking to develop and encourage sustainable forestry, primarily as a deterrent to the effects of climate change, but at the same time, to increase the export value of timber to more than USD 5.7 billion by 2020. Ha Cong Tuan, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, noted that the country must increase it forest coverage to 41.45% for that level of timber exports to be sustainable.
On managing the effects of climate change, he said that “forests also help make the climate equable, protect the environment and mitigate natural calamities.”
