Private commercial bank Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Albania began operations in September 1998 under the name American Bank of Albania (ABA). It had a start-up capital of USD 3.0 million, extended by a 30 million U.S. government-financed Albanian-American Enterprise Fund (AAEF), launched in 1995 to help businesses in Albania. In 2006 the AAEF signed an agreement selling 80% in the lender to Italian bank Sanpaolo IMI while maintaining control of 20% of the shares until 2009. The deal was finalized in June 2007. On 1 January 2008 American Bank of Albania merged with Banca Italo-Albanese, forming the second largest banking institution in Albania. In October 2008 ABA changed its name to Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Albania, after its parent company merged with Italian Banca Intesa and changed name to Intesa Sanpaolo Group. Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Albania offers a wide range of banking products and services to individuals and legal entities. It serves over 80,000 clients annually through a branch network of over 30 outlets nationwide.
