The Bulgarian subsidiary of Greece's second largest lender, Alpha Bank, is a successor of the local network of Greece's Ionian and Popular Bank.
Ionian and Popular Bank launched its first branch in Sofia in September 1995, five months after receiving a full banking licence from the Bulgarian central bank.
The initial goal of the branch was to serve corporate clients offering capital transfer, credit facilities and deposits.
In 1996, Ionian bank opened two new branches in Bulgaria bringing its total presence in the country to three. In December 2000, the branch network was renamed into Alpha Bank – Sofia, after Ionian and Popular Bank merged with Alpha Bank in April same year. Alpha Bank operates more than 60 branch offices throughout the country. Eurobank Bulgaria AD takes control over Alpha-bank signing a contract for transfer of the business enterprise and the activity of the bulgarian affiliate in March 2016. According to the contract all of Alpha-bank Bulgaria rights and obligations of the contracts with clients are now Eurobank Bulgaria AD obligations.
