Company Description
Balgarski Sporten Totalizator(Bulgarian Sports Lottery), founded in 1957, is a state-owned company, which operates various gambling games.
Since 1994, the lottery has launched some 40 scratch ticket games selling some 160 million tickets in the country by 2004.
The biggest prize awarded by the lottery, which was founded in 1898, stands at BGN 200,000.
All of the company's revenue is transferred to the country's education, health care, culture and social policy ministries.
Bulgaria's finance ministry launched in September 2003 a tender to select a manager of the country's state lottery but scrapped the procedure in December saying there were too few eligible bidders.
The ministry, which runs the lottery, said only two of the four bidders had met the tender requirements while the law required at least three.
Greek gaming system operator Intralot, U.S.-registered Scientific Games International, Austria's lottery Oesterreichische Lotterien and Sweden's EssNet filed non-binding bids at the first tender.
In June 2004, Bulgaria cancelled the second international public tender to select a lottery manager, since there was only one bid filed by Intralot.
The company runs more than 1800 terminals on the territory of the country.
It is a member of the World Lottary Association (WLA) and European Lottaries (EL).
Bulgarian Sports Lottary reported revenues of BGN 130.740 million for 2010, agains BGN 110.228 million for 2009. The distributed profits are at the amount of BGN 65.370 million for 2010, against BGN 55.114 million for 2009. The financial support for the Ministry of physical education and sport is about BGN 22 million for 2010, against BGN 23 million for 2009.
