Biovet, established in 1961, is a leading veterinary drug manufacturer in Bulgaria. The company, which is headquartered in Peshtera, 120 km southeast of the capital Sofia, has 4 production plants - three in Bulgaria, located in the towns of Peshtera, Blagoevgrad and Razgrad and one in Macedonia, Stip. The product portfolio of the firm features more than 80 items for animal health, human health and enzymes, which are sold in over 80 countries across the world.
A total of 25% of Biovet's equity capital was sold against privatisation vouchers in 1997 and 15% was earmarked for sale to employees. In April 2000, Bulgaria sold 54% in Biovet to the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Company (BPC) for USD 10.6 million in cash and the local company later raised its stake to 81% through stock exchange purchases and capital hikes.
