Decotex, which was established in 1909, is one of the leading textile manufacturers in Bulgaria. The company, based in the southern town of Sliven, is the sole producer of wool and synthetic rugs and runners in the country. Its product range also features bath mats and sets, wall-to-wall carpets, car sets and various types of blankets.
A total of 67% of Decotex was sold against vouchers under the government's mass privatisation programme in 1996-97. In February 1998, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold another 25% in the textile firm to local company Kappa Technology for USD 620,000. Of the remaining 8% of Decotex equity, 6.6% were offered at preferential prices to the firm's employees and 1.4% was set aside to meet restitution claims by former pre-communist owners. Kappa Technology gradually expanded its stake in the company to above 90% at the end of 2005.
