Bulgarian cable and conductor manufacturer Gamakabel, which was established in 1975, is based in the southern town of Smolyan. Its product range features copper wire, halogen-free cables, installation conductors, connecting cords for household appliances, flexible PUR cables, power cables, radio frequency cables, cables for telecommunication systems, automotive cables.
A 67% stake in Gamakabel was offered for sale against vouchers under the government's mass privatisation programme in 1997. In August 1997, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold an 18.5% stake in the company to local firm Promkomplekt AD for USD 324,845. A further 6.6% of the company's capital was offered to its staff at preferential prices and the remaining 7.9% was used to meet restitution claims by former owners. In November 2003, locally-registered firm Marengo Trading acquired a 43.04% stake in Gamakabel and seven months later an identical package of shares in the cable maker was purchased on the local stock exchange by British Virgin Islands-registered Tradespot Investments Ltd.
