Bulgaria's sole gypsum producer Gips, which was established in 1965, operates the gypsum field Koshava near the Danube port of Vidin. The firm produces gypsum, anhydrite, plasters and special dentistry gypsum. Gips has an annual production capacity of some 160,000 tonnes of natural gypsum and 85,000 tonnes of construction and other special types of gypsum.
In June 2005, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold 99.52% of the gypsum producer to local company Gips Invest for EUR 1.4 million. The new owner is controlled by Bulgaria's leading wall and floor tile producer Han Asparuh.
In August 2010 the company started the construction of a new factory for natural gypsum in Koshava village with annual capacity of 60,000 tons. The investment is at the amount of BGN 11.270 million paid by the company, the state and EU funds.
Currently, the company exports its production to Serbia and Romania.
