Bulgarian State Railways (Balgarski Darzhavni Zheleznitsi – BDZ) is a Bulgarian state-owned railway company, the largest rail operator in the country, operating domestic and international rail services mainly by means of its own locomotives, coaches and other railway machines. Until 2002 also maintains the main part of the railway infrastructure in the country, then separated from from it to National Railway Infrastructure Company. BDZ Holding is the sole owner of BDZ Passengers and BDZ Tovarni Prevozi.
The company traditionally relies for its existence on a significant government subsidies. In 2008, in addition to the grants for travel for certain categories of passengers, it received a BGN 135.5 mln direct state aid, but even with it ended the year with over BGN 9 mln loss.
