Bulgarian producer of wall and floor tiles Khan Omurtag AD is part of one of the country's leading ceramic tiles manufacturers KAI Group. The plant is located near the city of Shumen in northeast Bulgaria, some 80 kilometres from the Black Sea port of Varna. Together with Khan Asparuh AD, also part of KAI Group, both plants have an annual production capacity of 28 million square meters of tiles.
The controlling stake in the firm was offered for mass sell-offs under the country's voucher privatisation programme in 1997. Around 50% of Han Omurtag equity was purchased by two privatisation funds that were controlled by Czech Republic-based asset management house Europa Capital Management (ECM). Under the voucher privatisation programme, ECM also acquired controlling stake in wall and floor tile producer Han Asparuh. In June 2005, Han Asparuh acquired full control of Han Omurtag thus merging it into KAI Group.
