Kintex, the leading Bulgarian trading firm for defence products was established in 1966 and is the country's oldest arms exporter. The state-owned trading company was the nation's only authorized weapons export company during the Cold War period. Kintex established and maintained virtually exclusive relationships with customers all over the world, and as a result local defence firms themselves had little contact with the outside world. During communism, the company maintained contacts in 50 countries and sold them mainly small arms, ammunition, as well as tanks and combat aircraft retired from service.
In the 1980s, Bulgaria annually exported an estimated USD 250 million to USD 500 million worth of arms and military equipment. Much of the country's small arms sales (approximately 50% in 2000) are still made through Kintex. The company, which exports mainly to India and Algeria, but also to Bangladesh, Yemen, Botswana, Greece, Angola, Libya and Jordan, is undergoing a sell-off procedure.
In 2010 the company Teraton merged into Kintex.
In February 2011, the government announced that the company would remain state owned for the time being.
