Kozloduy NPP, which is located some 200 kilometers (120 miles) north of the capital Sofia on the Danube River, is the only nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, providing more than one third of the total annual electricity output of the country. The Soviet-designed 3,760 MW plant, built between 1969 and the late 1980s, was constructed with 6 units. The Kozloduy nuclear plant closed down two pairs of 440-MW reactors in 2002 and at the end of 2006, respectively. The moves, intended to allay nuclear safety concerns of the European Union which Bulgaria joined on January 1, 2007, left the plant with just two operating reactors up to date. Since 2008 the company operates as a subsidiary of the Bulgarian Energy Holding. Thanks to the 1,000 MW Units 5 and 6, Kozloduy produced a total of 14,171,222 MWh of electricity in 2013.
