Bulgaria's state-owned Maritsa East Two power plant is located at the Maritsa East lignite coal mining complex in south Bulgaria. The company is engaged in operating fossil fuel powered electric power generation facilities, which use coal to produce electric energy. The plant is built on an area of 512 hectares of land and is located near the Radetski village. It has eight units and a capacity of 1,600 megawatts.
In April 2003, Bulgarian authorities signed a EUR 226 million deal with Japanese contractor, Mitsui & Co to extend the life, lower pollution, and increase capacity at the coal-fired plant. In 2005, Maritsa East 2 TPP launched the rehabilitation of units 1 and 2.
Over 2005 - 2013 the company completed two large scale projects: “Rehabilitation at Units 1 to 4, Flue Gas Desulphurization Plant (FGDP) erection at Units 1 and 2, 3 and 4, Units 6 and 8 modernization” and “Flue Gas Desulphurization Plant (FGDP) erection at Units 5 and 6”.
