Bulgaria's state-owned power grid operator NEC (National Electricity Company) was incorporated in 1991. The company is active in the fields of trade, generation, transmission, supply, import and export of electricity. It is also responsible for the construction and maintenance of power generation and transmission facilities. Since September 2008 NEC operates as a subsidiary of the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH). NEC owns 30 hydro power plants, with a total installed capacity of 2,713 MW. The company produced 2,999,026 MWh of hydro power in 2012.
