Nova Television was established in 1994 by Serbian-born businessman Darko Tamindjic and gradually started broadcasting a 24-hour programme in the region of Sofia. In February 2000, Nova TV received a licence for nationwide cable distribution and satellite broadcasting.
In August 2000, Greece's Antenna TV bought three of the Tamindjic-controlled media companies - 100% of Nova Television - First Private Channel, 100% of Multimex I.D and 94% of Radio Express's shares for a total price of USD 3.7 million.
In October 2000, Nova Television was awarded a licence for the country's second private nationwide TV channel.
Bulgaria's first licence for a private national television channel was won in April 2000 by Balkan News Corporation, fully-owned by media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. In July 2001, Bulgaria's supreme administrative court revoked the nationwide licence of Nova TV after one of the other bidders contested the transparency of the selection procedure. Nova Television received a nationwide licence after it won the country's third competition for private nationwide TV channel held in July 2003.
In mid-2010, Nova+ and Diema Vision merged into Nova TV and in December the company was renamed into Nova Broadcasting Group.
