Port Varna, Bulgaria's biggest sea port, was opened for operation in 1906 and nationalised by the communist regime in 1947. It consists of two units - Varna East and Varna West. The port has two container terminals, one in Varna East and the other in Varna West, and an overall quay length of 5,601 m. It has 32 berths, an open storage area of 240,800 sq m and a closed storage area of 77,500 sq m. Typical cargoes for Varna are grain, containers, chemicals and general cargo.
