Sofiyska Voda was set up as a joint venture by British company International Water, which was given a 25-year concession on the water-and-sewage system in Sofia in November 1999. Sofiyska Voda, where International Water and UK water and electricity firm United Utilities each held 37.5% stakes, was established in 2000. The remainder in the tie-up was held by the local state water supply and sewage company.
