Vulkan, which was established in 1947, is engaged in the production, distribution, marketing and sale of cement, asbestos cement (AC) tubes, AC plates and asbestos cardboard. In February 1999, Ciments Francais - a unit of Italy's Italcementi group - bought a 70% stake in Vulkan for USD 18.8 million in cash. In June 2003, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold a 24.95% of Vulkan equity to the country's largest cement manufacturer Devnya Cement, which is also controlled by Italcementi group, for EUR 870,000. Italcementi claimed around 40% of Bulgaria's cement market in 2005, accounting for 90% of the cement exports from the Balkan state. The Italian group invested some USD 260 million in Bulgaria over 1998-2006.
