Wienerberger OOD is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Austrian brick and tile maker Wienerberger. The company sells in Bulgaria brick and ceiling systems, bricks and clay roof tiles under the Wienerberger brands of Porotherm, Terca and Koramic, respectively.
Wienerberger OOD launched a plant producing the Porotherm clay blocks and bricks, in the Bulgarian town of Lukovit, some 120 km away from Sofia, in November 2007. The company invested more than EUR 25 million to modernise the plant between September 2006 and September 2007. The facility covers a total area of 107,000 sq m and includes a warehousing area, a production area with a kiln, auxiliary and drying areas, a clay warehouse and an administrative building. The clay used to make the bricks is excavated near the plant and transported to the production unit with a rubber band.
Wienerberger also has a concrete roof tiles plant located in the northern Bulgarian town of Silistra.
In December 2007, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) lent EUR 6.75 million to Wienerberger Bulgaria to finance the upgrade of its brick plant in Lukovit.
