The company, formerly known as Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), was created by the Federal Government on June 1st 1942 and privatized in May 7th, 1997, when Brazil Consortium, led by Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN), won the auction held on the Stock Exchange of Rio de Janeiro. Vale is present through subsidiaries in countries like: United States, Argentina, Chile, Peru, France, Norway and Bahrain and also has offices in New York, Brussels, Tokyo and Shanghai. Vale is the world leader in the production of iron ore and pellets, and the second largest producer of nickel. Acting through its offices, operations, exploration and joint ventures, the company is the second largest diversified mining company in the world and the largest one in the Americas by market value.
