Shell established itself in Ghana in 1928, at which time the country was known as the Gold Coast. Hence Shell celebrated its 75th anniversary in Ghana in 2003. Shell Ghana Limited (SGL) is an Operating Company of the Royal/Dutch Shell Group and was incorporated in 1963. It is primarily a downstream operation without a refinery and only a very limited number of fuel depots and has over the years transformed both in business activity and organisational structure. SGL acquired the assets of Texaco Ghana Limited in 1988 making it the clear market leader for several years. The Shell Petroleum Company UK (SPCo) has 82.3% shareholding in SGL. The balance is held by some 950+ shareholders of whom the Ghana Commercial Bank, through its subsidiary Development Finance and Holdings Limited, is the largest single shareholder with 9% shareholding. SGL communicates its results to all shareholders during the Annual General Meeting and through its Annual Report. Apart from its commercial activities, SGL acts as leader in promoting regulatory and Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) standards across the industry.
