Kharg Petrochemical Limited Liability Company was established in 1967 as Kharg Chemical Co. in Tehran, Iran in order to recover propane, butane, naphtha and sulfur from the offshore oil field associated gases by the joint venture of national petrochemical company of Iran and American Co. (Amoco) on a 50/50 basis with a capital of 900 million rials.In 1992 in order to prevent the flaring of surplus gases, to produce a product with considerable added value, to ease technology transfer, to reduce environmental pollution and to provide occupation opportunities in the region,construction of Kharg methanol plant was started. This plant with production technology from Lurgi (Germany) with the investment of $149.5 million and 465.5 billion rials, was established in an area of 24 acres and was commissioned in 1998.
