Lao Sapphire Corporation Limited engages in the mining business. The company is a subsidiary of Sino Resources Mining. Sapphires from the region exhibit unique characteristics and excellent color and is closely related to the fabled Mogok corundums. The operation also supports a number of activities aimed at building the capacity of the local community in terms of vocational and industry related skills. In May 2006, Sino Resources Mining Corporation was granted 800 hectares of concession area and entered into a joint venture to form Lao Sapphire. Sino Resources Mining Corporation has the controlling interest in the joint venture. The company is based in Vientiane.
