Banorte S.A. began operations in 1947, but its origins date back to 1899 with the foundation of "Banco Mercantil del Norte". In 1986 both banks merged and formed "Banco Mercantil del Norte, S.N.C". The bank is a subsidiary of "Grupo Financiero Banorte". In june 1992, "Banorte" was acquired by a group of investors headed by Roberto Gonzalez Barrera. In 1993, "Grupo Financiero Banorte" was formed with all the financial services such as leasing, stock trading, investments. In 1997, "Banorte" acquired "Bancen" and "Banpais", turning into one of the biggest bank nationalwide. In January 2002, "Banorte" acquired "Bancrecer", and its name changed to "Banco Mercantil del Norte, S.A.".
