The Institute for the Protection of Bank Savings (IPAB) is a decentralized organism of the Federal Public Administration, with legal personality and patrimony created under the Law for the Protection of Bank Savings.

The Law for the Protection of Bank Savings, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on January 19, 1999, has as its principal objectives the establishment of a system for the protection of bank savings, the conclusion of the rehabilitation processes of banking institutions, and the administration and sale of IPAB assets, in order to obtain the maximum possible recovery value.
