In 1928 The War Ministry set up the National Service of Air Navigation for opening an air transportation line between Bucharest and Cluj. The airline used the Farman-Goliath aircraft, a plane with two engines and ten places.The Farman-Goliath aircrafts used as destination the Aerodrom of the II Group Aerodrome of Aviation – the Someseni Cluj Aerodrome. (The airline commander-in-chief was in 1928 lt.av.Boris Antonie and lt.av.Batacui Corneli, in 1929). The foundation date of the Cluj Civil Airport, by the Ministry of Trade and Industry took place on the 1st of April, 1932. The 11th of September, 1933 was the date when the first international airline Praga-Cluj-Bucharest was opened, in the presence of local authorities.
During the World War II, in September 1944 the airport was destroyed. After the war, the airport activity resumed with domestic scheduled domestic flights, between all important centers of the country. In the same time Tarom National Company operated flights on the Cluj Airport.
The modernization of the airport began in the ‘60. Since September 1996 the Cluj Airport is opened to the international traffic of passengers and cargo.
The Council of the Cluj County has administrated the International Cluj-Napoca Airport since august 1997.
