Open Society Karelian Pellet (Karelskiy Okatysh) was established on the basis of Kostomuksha ore-dressing plant, which construction started in 1974 jointly by Soviet and Finnish firms. In March 1993 the company was reorganized into open joint stock company Karelian Pellet. The main activities are the mining and processing of ferrous quartzites in the high-quality raw materials - iron ore pellets. The share of enterprises account for 30% of the total volume of pellets produced in Russia and 40% of total Russian exports of pellets. The main consumer of Kostomukshsky pellets in the Russian market is JSC Severstal. Among foreign partners are steel mills in Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Norway, Germany and Turkey.
