Republic Financial Holdings Ltda. was founded in 1837 with the name Colonial Bank. It was the first commercial bank in Trinidad and Tobago. It changed its name in 1981 to Republic Bank Limited. The company began holding after it having completely acquired the National Commercial Bank in Grenada, the National Bank of Industry and Commerce in Guyana, Barbados National bank and 57% of HFC Banks in Ghana and 20% of East Caribbean Financial Holding Company Limited in St. Lucia. Nowadays it is one of the largest banks in Trinidad and Tobago, with 15 subsidiaries and more than 5000 employees.
