Santander Bank S.A. started it's operations in Uruguay in 1979. Currently the Santander Group in Uruguay includes the following institutions: Banco Santander, Afinidad AFAP (pension funds), Personas Santander (credit card issuer) and Santander Seguros. The business of the bank is mainly focused on large and medium enterprises with their Foreign Trade and Business area as their main strength. In 2008 it absorbed by merger ABN Amro Bank N.V. Sucursal Uruguay, becoming the first private bank in assets of the country.
