Shell and BP South African Petroleum Refineries (Pty) Ltd, located in Prospecton, is the largest crude oil refinery in South Africa, accounting for 35% of the country's refining capacity. It is a joint venture between Shell Refining SA and BP Southern Africa. The refinery processes 24,000 tons of crude oil per day and produces 10 main products in 46 different grades. These products include petrol, diesel, jet fuel, lubricating oil, liquid petroleum gas, paraffin, solvents, bitumen, marine fuel oil, and chemical feedstocks. SAPREF operates the single buoy mooring (SBM) through which 80% of the country's crude oil is supplied. The refinery utilizes fractionation and conversion processes to break down and upgrade the crude oil into different constituents for various applications. SAPREF's operations involve high temperatures and pressures, with pipe work spanning 160,000 km.
