After the dip in deal flow during Q1, activity in Emerging Europe picked up significantly throughout the rest of the year, peaking at 588 transactions in Q4. The aggregate value of deals during that last quarter however was unusually low compared to previous years – just EUR 13.6bn. Overall for the full 12 months, M&A transactions were 2,185 (1.3% increase y/y) for a total sum of EUR 81.1bn, marking a 28.9% increase in value y/y largely due to the strong Q2.
Once the uncertainty around Brexit is resolved, there could be some uptick in M&A as investment plans put on hold are likely to resume. Free capital at private equity and pension funds will not sit idle for long and although the general feeling is that the region might be turning a bit more volatile than before, the challenges will surely also create opportunities for those quick to adapt and with deep pockets.
