Argentina Automotive Sector Report 2016/2017

The automotive industry has been one of Argentina’s most dynamic since the recovery of the domestic economy from 2003 onwards. Between 2003 and 2011, the production of motor vehicles expanded at a robust CAGR of 21.9%. However, since then the indicator recorded an erratic evolution, dropping by a cumulative 36.4% over 2011-2015. This was mainly due to the decelerating economy, the stubbornly high inflation, the depreciation of the Argentine peso and the fall of vehicle demand in Brazil – the main trading partner of Argentina. Although the country has chronic trade surpluses in vehicles, which reached USD 648mn in 2015, the automotive complex has a structural trade deficit in auto parts, mainly as a consequence of the deficiencies in quantity and quality terms of the domestic auto parts industry, which recorded a trade deficit of USD 6.3bn during the year.
