After experiencing a shock during the 2001-2002 economic crisis, Argentina’s banking sector has been expanding since 2010, with loans and deposits rising at respective CAGRs of 11.1% and 8.4% in real terms over 2010-2015, outperforming the overall GDP growth rate (CAGR of 0.9%). However, due to numerous financial crises, stubbornly high inflation and several devaluations of the local currency, the Argentine banking system remains underdeveloped. Another major constraint is the preference of the local population for saving in U.S. dollars, mainly abroad, due to low confidence in the domestic banking system. However, this situation is expected to change, supported by the liberalisation moves of the new President Mauricio Macri, who has pledged to liberalise the economy, restore credibility and make the country a more attractive investment destination.
