Construction was one of the sectors most affected by the 2015-2016 economic recession in Brazil. In 2018, despite the rebound of the economy, construction activity fell for a fifth year in a row, impaired by a high inventory of residential and non-residential buildings in key markets, falling property prices and low public and private investment in infrastructure. An additional negative impact came from the ongoing corruption investigation known as Operation Car Wash, which created financial, liquidity and reputational problems for incumbent players, and triggered a profound restructuring of the sector. Nevertheless, as local demand for real estate continues to be on the rise, trailing the accelerating economy and improved consumer and business confidence following the October 2018 elections, construction activity in the country is set to return to growth in the second half of 2019.
