Brazil’s insurance sector expanded at a CAGR of 16.1% in terms of premium income between 2011 and 2014, outperforming the overall GDP growth during the period (CAGR of 1.7%), supported by growing household incomes, strong labour market and increasing wages, coupled with robust investments in infrastructure projects. Even in 2015, when Brazil’s economy shrunk by 3.8% y/y, the biggest contraction since 1990, the market continued to grow in real terms by 1.4% y/y, mainly due to increased demand for insurance protection in the context of a deep economic and political crisis. The insurance premiums/GDP ratio remains low when compared with developed countries, at 3.1% in 2015, highlighting huge growth and penetration opportunities for the domestic insurance sector.
