The oil and gas sector in Brazil has emerged as one of the country’s driving forces since 1995, when the monopoly of state-run Petroleo Brasileiro (Petrobras) was ended. Following this liberalisation, the sector’s share in Brazil’s GDP witnessed a four-fold increase to about 13% in 2015, of which 1% was accounted for by extraction. In 2015, the production of oil and natural gas rose by 8.1% and 10.1% y/y, respectively, well above the CAGRs of 2.3% and 8.6% observed over 2010-2014. The rise was supported by an exponential increase of the output from pre-salt fields. On the downside, in 2015, the sector witnessed a 20% y/y drop in proven oil reserves, stemming from the adoption of a new Petroleum Resources Management System, the downward trend of oil prices in the international markets that hampered the investment capacity of private companies, and the ongoing corruption investigation at Petrobras, dubbed “Car Wash”, which forced the company to cut its capital expenditure plan to USD 98.4bn for the period 2015-2019, down from an initial allocation of USD 206.8bn for 2014-2018.
