Brazil’s oil and gas sector has been transformed by the discovery and development of the abundant hydrocarbon reservoirs in the pre-salt offshore region, which started in 2006. A decade later, the country surpassed Mexico and Venezuela to become Latin America’s largest crude oil producer in 2016, a position it has retained ever since. Moreover, Brazil also ranked the tenth largest oil producer globally and a net exporter of hydrocarbons and derivatives in 2017. Even though the state-run company Petrobras led this process, the role of private players in the sector has been increasing as a result of the 14 concession rounds for exploratory blocks and production sharing agreements held between 2013 and 2019, as well as the clear market support from the federal government.
