China Automotive Sector Report 2016 3rd Quarter

The Chinese automotive sector’s y/y growth speeded up in the first nine months of 2016, improving an already strong performance in the first half of the year. In the first nine months of 2016, motor vehicle sales grew by 13.2% y/y to 19.29mn units. This marks a significant market recovery, given that growth in the same period of 2015 had only been 0.3% y/y. Sales growth was largely driven by rising demand for sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in the period, as consumers’ preferences shift toward usage of more spacious cars with high seating positions and more dynamic design. At the same time, more suppliers have launched new models in the market at more competitive prices, which has triggered price competition in the last few quarters and made SUVs more affordable for the average consumer. Sales of SUVs increased by nearly 47% y/y in the first three quarters of 2016, reaching almost 6mn units, compared to sales of 4.1mn units in the same period last year.
