China’s banking sector developed steadily in Q1 2019, despite the increasingly tense global business environment and the slowing domestic economic growth. The sector’s total assets reached RMB 275.8tn as of the quarter end, an increase of 2.8% compared with end-2018. The large commercial banks witnessed the fastest expansion, their total assets growing by 14.3% q/q or 18.2% y/y to RMB 112.4tn. Aggregated assets of large commercial banks accounted for 40.8% of the sector’s total in Q1 2019, improving by 4 pp from 36.7% in Q4 2018. This indicates that these banks are more resilient to external uncertainties.
