China is the largest cement producer in the world, accounting for 57.4% of the global cement output in 2015, according to estimates from the US Geological Survey’s National Minerals Information Center (USGS). The cement sector in China is characterised by overcapacity, large number of enterprises and fierce competition. The sector is undergoing a process of consolidation with an increasing number of M&As between local enterprises. Cement manufacturing in China experienced a huge transformation towards advanced cement production by replacing outdated shaft kilns with the more efficient new suspension preheater (NSP) kilns. The number of NSP clinker production lines in China increased from 792 in 2007 to 1,769 at the end of 2016. At present, above 95% of the kilns operated in China are NSP kilns.
