China Consumer Goods and Retail Sector Report 2020 2nd Quarter

In Q1 2020, the performance of China’s retail sector was affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. The country’s GDP declined by 6.8% y/y in the period, while the GDP generated by the wholesale and retail sectors dropped by 17.8% y/y. Average consumer spending in China decreased by 8.2% y/y, with 9.5% and 5.4% y/y slides in urban and rural areas, respectively. Retail sales shrunk by 19.6% y/y to RMB 7,858bn in Q1 2020, and by 45% y/y in the most seriously hit Hubei province alone. According to a report of Kantar Worldpanel, total spending on fast-moving consumer goods in Q1 2020 recorded a 6.7% y/y decline, while the sales of household products rose by 7.4% y/y in the period.
