In Q4 2017, the revenue of China’s food sector declined by 21.9% y/y to RMB 550.7bn mostly due to lower food prices. Food prices went down by 1.4% y/y in 2017, mainly because of sufficient supplies of pork and fresh vegetables. In 2017 pork prices fell by 14.6% y/y and the prices of fresh vegetables decreased by 8.1%. In order to better satisfy diversified consumer demand and boost domestic consumption, China reduced import tariffs on 187 consumer goods, including food, at the beginning of December 2017. This is the fourth cut of the import tariffs on consumer goods since 2015. The average tariff rate drops from 17.3% to 7.7% and the tariffs of some infant formula and milk powder products were abolished entirely. The duties on some aquatic products decreased by 50% and those on fresh and refrigerated meat declined to 8% from 15%. The lower tariffs are expected to help China increase imports and reduce trade surplus.
