China's healthcare system is hospital-centric, with public hospitals delivering approximately 90% of the inpatient and outpatient care consumed in the country today in both hospitals and basic medical institutions. Nearly 40% of hospitals’ revenue is generated by pharmaceutical sales. The Chinese healthcare market has been growing strongly, focusing on the treatment of chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes and respiratory conditions. China's current shortage of quality public healthcare services has resulted in a rising demand for private medical care. However, private healthcare is underdeveloped and faces difficulties in finding quality doctors, as many of the best ones are employed by public hospitals via exclusivity clauses. Doctors in public hospitals are seriously underpaid, which makes them dependent on additional unofficial income from pharmaceutical companies and patients. Hospitals generate nearly half of their revenues from drug sales, and despite being public, receive grossly inadequate funding from the government.
